Astakos is a quiet mainland harbour on the coast of Aetolia-Acarnania, and for much of the year this crossing to Pissaetos is the simplest way to get a car onto Ithaca without looping round through Patras or Kefalonia. It is a working link rather than a tourist shuttle: the quay at Astakos is small and unhurried, and Pissaetos itself is little more than a jetty a short drive from Vathy, Ithaca's main town, so it helps to have transport sorted for the final leg. The open stretch of the Ionian in between can carry a bit of a swell when the wind gets up, though the crossing is short enough that it rarely troubles anyone for long.
