Sailing from Sami, on Kefalonia's northeast coast, across to the small mainland port of Astakos, this crossing is one of the more low-key ways to reach the island without routing through Patras or Kyllini. Sami is a proper working harbour rather than a resort strip, with the village itself only a short walk from the quay, while Astakos sits quietly on the mainland coast of Aetolia-Acarnania, well off the usual tourist circuit. The route runs mostly within the strait separating the island from the mainland, so it tends to feel more sheltered than open-water crossings elsewhere in the Ionian.

Expect at least one sailing a day through the main season, occasionally stepping up to two at the height of summer -- the schedule box above shows exactly what is currently confirmed. Outside the busiest months the service can thin out, so it is worth checking departures close to your travel dates rather than assuming a fixed daily crossing.
