Taking the ferry from Santorini to Tinos is one of those island hops that rewards you well. Santorini needs little introduction -- the caldera views, the clifftop villages, the crowds. Tinos, by contrast, is quieter and deeper. Its main draw is the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in the Orthodox world, but venture inland and you find carved marble villages, a landscape quilted with the island's distinctive dovecotes, and a pace of life that has nothing to prove to anyone.
The route runs year-round, though winter sailings thin out considerably. In summer the connection is genuinely convenient, with up to three or four departures a day giving you real flexibility. Book ahead in July and August -- these are the busiest weeks across the Cyclades and tickets do sell out.
