Sikinos is one of the quieter corners of the Cyclades -- small enough that you can walk most of it, unhurried enough that you might actually want to. From Syros, a single daily ferry connects these two islands for most of the year, running from February through August. It is not the flashiest route in the Aegean, but it gets you somewhere genuinely worth reaching.
Syros itself deserves more than a passing glance. The capital, Ermoupoli, is the administrative centre of the Cyclades and one of the finest neoclassical port towns in Greece -- grand squares, marble streets, and a working harbour that feels lived-in rather than preserved for tourism. Arriving or departing here is a pleasure in itself.
For the crossing, expect a sailing time that varies depending on which islands the ferry stops at along the way. Check the current timetable carefully and book ahead, particularly in July and August when capacity on this quieter route fills up faster than you might expect.
