Ferry from Aegina to Athens (Piraeus)

Aegina to Piraeus is the busiest short-sea route in Greece, and the choice of boat decides the journey time. Hellenic Seaways' Aero 2 and Aero 3 high-speed catamarans cross in about 35 minutes, while the conventional ferries run by Saronic Ferries, Aegina Ferries, Olympian Ferries and others take up to an hour and a quarter. Aegean Flying Dolphins add hydrofoil sailings on top of that. The slower ships carry vehicles and cost less; the fast ones simply get you there.

Piraeus is the main port of Athens, a sprawling harbour with gates numbered E1 to E12 and one of the heaviest passenger throughputs in Europe. Saronic arrivals berth on the eastern side, close to the metro terminus that runs straight into the city centre and out to the airport with one change. Mikrolimano marina and the archaeological museum are both within walking distance if you have time to fill.

There are dozens of departures a day, effectively hourly or better from early morning to late evening, and the service holds up through winter. Live timings and fares are shown below, with tickets from around €9. If you are connecting to another island ferry, allow time to walk between gates, which can take twenty minutes or more at the far end of the port.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Piraeus?

Yes, several agencies meet passengers directly at the ferry gates (E1 to E12), so there is no need to arrange transport into central Athens first. It suits travellers continuing on to the mainland rather than islanders, since central Athens is only 20 minutes away and has good metro and bus links. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.

Do you need a car on Aegina?

Not really. Aegina is a popular day trip from Piraeus, and frequent buses run from the port in Aegina Town to Agia Marina, Perdika and the Temple of Aphaia, though services thin out to around five a day. Aegina Town itself is easily walkable. A car, moped or bicycle, hired from offices behind the waterfront, suits those staying longer or covering the island in one day; compare rates at Discover Cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tips for the Aegina to Piraeus ferry

• Cabin availability is limited; if you want a cabin on an overnight route, book it the moment you confirm your travel dates.
• Watch for swell forecasts as well as wind speed – residual swell from a previous day's storm can make a crossing rough even when current wind is light.
• Ferries from Piraeus depart from the main port of Athens, giving easy access to the Acropolis, the world-class Acropolis Museum, and the ancient Agora. The historic Plaka neighbourhood at the foot of the Acropolis hill, with its neoclassical lanes, Roman ruins, and traditional tavernas, is the most atmospheric place to spend time before or after your crossing.
