Ferry from Spetses to Athens (Piraeus)

Spetses to Piraeus is the long haul of the Saronic line, an hour and a half on a direct fast sailing and up to nearly four hours on services calling at Hydra, Poros and Aegina. Hellenic Seaways, Alpha Lines and Magic Sea Ferries all work it with the Aero highspeed catamarans. All of it is foot-passenger traffic, so a hire car has to be left on the mainland side.

Piraeus is the main port of Athens, a few kilometres southwest of the centre and among the busiest passenger ports in Europe. The metro station beside the harbour runs straight into central Athens with an onward connection to the airport. It is a large port split across numbered gates from E1 to E12, so it helps to know which one you are arriving at.

Departures are frequent, many a day in high summer and still regular through the shoulder months. Current times and fares are shown below, with fares starting around forty euro. If you are driving, the short crossing to Porto Heli and the road up through the Argolid is often quicker than the boat all the way.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Piraeus?

Yes, several agencies meet passengers directly at the ferry gates (E1 to E12), so there is no need to arrange transport into central Athens first. It suits travellers continuing on to the mainland rather than islanders, since central Athens is only 20 minutes away and has good metro and bus links. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tips for the Spetses to Piraeus ferry

• Short crossings are less affected by meltemi conditions than longer open-sea routes – but sheltered routes between close neighbours are calmer than fully exposed ones.
• A rough sea crossing in a large conventional ferry is inconvenient but very rarely dangerous; Greek ferry operators have strict safety protocols and experienced crews.
• Short-hop ferries between islands in the Saronic Gulf (Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Spetses) run very frequently from Piraeus; check which pier they depart from.
• When booking for the return leg of a day trip, remember that the last ferry of the day can fill up – book your return at the same time as your outward journey.
• Ferries from Piraeus depart from the main port of Athens, giving easy access to the Acropolis, the world-class Acropolis Museum, and the ancient Agora. The historic Plaka neighbourhood at the foot of the Acropolis hill, with its neoclassical lanes, Roman ruins, and traditional tavernas, is the most atmospheric place to spend time before or after your crossing.
